Community Champion

Z Smith, Eskew+Dumez+Ripple  

Z Smith is Principal and Director of Sustainability &Performance at Eskew+Dumez+Ripple. Since 2009, when he and his family moved to New Orleans, Z has worked every day to make a difference in our community. He is Louisiana's only LEED Fellow.  He mentors young architects in building performance, teaches at Tulane, and lends his expertise to numerous boards and organizations..

Community Championship Teams

City of Baton Rouge/East Baton Rouge Parish                

In the last year, the City of Baton Rouge has achieved LEED certification for two city/parish buildings. Future projects around the city are also focused on energy savings, reducing operating costs, minimizing maintenance and maximizing the investment of taxpayer dollars.

Bayou Vermilion District                         

Since 1984, the Lafayette Parish Bayou Vermilion District has worked to beautify, conserve and manage sites along the Vermilion ensuring the preservation and enhancement of the natural and cultural resources for the citizens of Lafayette Parish.

The District removes trash and large debris from the Vermilion in addition to working with local government to monitor the water quality and water height of the Vermilion. They work with the school board to educate students in Lafayette Parish about the Watershed and their role in helping to maintain water quality in the Vermilion.

Innovation Champion                          
Edible Schoolyard New Orleans

Founded in 2006, Edible Schoolyard New Orleans changes the way children eat, learn, and live at five FirstLine public charter schools in New Orleans. Their aim is to improve the long-term wellbeing of students, families, and school community, by integrating hands-on organic gardening and seasonal cooking into the school curriculum, culture, and cafeteria programs.

Operational Excellence Champion
Iberville Parish School System Building & Grounds Team

This team has created maintenance plans that include energy efficient improvements that over time have saved the school system hundreds of thousands of dollars. They have invested in energy benchmarking software to track energy use and costs to support future building improvements.  The department provides green school and efficiency training to all of the maintenance employees.
